LOF for Citrus Water Deficiency

LOF for Citrus Water Deficiency

Liquid Organic Fertilizer (LOF)

Liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) is a natural solution to enhance fruit quality and soil fertility. Utilizing materials such as fish entrails, coconut water, and salt, this fertilizer provides essential nutrients that support plant growth, especially for citrus trees often facing water deficiency and suboptimal fruit quality.

1. Causes of Citrus Water Deficiency and Low Sweetness

  • Water Shortage During Growth: Insufficient water supply causes fruits to become small, dry, and less sweet.
  • Nutrient Deficiency: Nutrients like potassium (K) and phosphorus (P) are crucial for natural sugar formation in fruits.
  • Unfertile Soil: Inappropriate soil pH (ideal: 5.5–6.5) affects fruit quality.
  • Early Harvest: Fruits harvested too early do not reach full maturity.
  • Citrus Variety: Some citrus types are genetically less sweet.

Solutions:

  • Ensure regular watering, especially during the dry season.
  • Apply potassium-rich fertilizers like KCl.
  • Add organic fertilizers to improve soil conditions.
  • Ensure the tree gets enough sunlight (at least 6 hours/day).
  • Choose superior citrus varieties like sweet oranges (Citrus sinensis).

2. Salt Solution Ratio for Plants

Ratio: 1 kg salt : 100 liters of water

Benefits:

  • Increases sugar content in fruits.
  • Balances soil nutrients.
  • Repels certain pests.

Frequency:

Use 1–2 times per season, especially during fruit formation.

Application:

  • Pour the solution into the soil around the tree (30–50 cm from the trunk).
  • Avoid overuse to prevent increased soil salinity.

3. Steps to Make LOF

Materials:

  • Fish entrails/fish waste: 5–10 kg
  • Coconut water: Sufficient (up to 100% of the mixture volume)
  • Salt: 1 kg (for every 100 liters of solution)
  • Brown sugar/molasses: 1 kg
  • Fermentation starter (optional): 200 ml EM4

Tools:

  • Plastic drum or sealed container (minimum volume 120 liters)
  • Long stirrer
  • Filter cloth or porous cover

Steps:

  1. Ferment Fish Entrails (1 Month):
    • Cut the fish entrails into small pieces and place them in a container.
    • Add brown sugar/molasses and EM4 (if available).
    • Cover the container with a porous cloth and store in a shaded area for 30 days.
    • Stir every 3–5 days to prevent sedimentation.
  2. Mixing with Coconut Water and Salt (14 Days):
    • Take the fermented liquid from the fish entrails (20% of the container volume).
    • Add coconut water to reach a total of 100%.
    • Dissolve 1 kg of salt in the solution if the container volume is 100 liters.
    • Ferment this mixture for 14 days, stirring every 2–3 days.
  3. Application:
    • Dilute the liquid fertilizer with a 1:20 ratio (1 liter of fertilizer: 20 liters of water).
    • Pour around the base of the tree, 30–50 cm from the trunk.
    • Use 1–2 times per month during fruit formation.

4. Fermentation Duration

  • Fish Entrails Fermentation (1 Month): This duration is ideal for breaking down organic compounds into nutrients easily absorbed by plants. If a foul odor appears, fermentation can be extended up to 45 days.
  • Coconut Water and Salt Mixture Fermentation (14 Days): This period is sufficient as coconut water and salt accelerate the fermentation process. If necessary, fermentation can be extended but must be monitored to prevent spoilage.

We hope this information helps improve your harvest!
